The BSGM, constituent groups and individual members have developed a series of information sheets, guidance and tools to support clinicians, patients and their families during the COVID-19 pandemic. While these resources have been circulated to members as they have been released, links to all available resources are also provided below.

Information sheets and BSL videos

Last month the BSGM, along with the CGS and AGNC, released six fact sheets to provide information about COVID-19 for people with rare disorders, including rare chromosomal and gene disorders.

An overview of COVID-19 and rare disease

What makes a person more vulnerable to COVID-19

Understanding your risk from COVID-19 if you have a rare disease

What should I do if I am an extremely vulnerable person?

What to do if you have symptoms that could be due to COVID-19?

I am worried about letting my carer/my child’s carer into my home – what should I do?

These information sheets are now also available in BSL (British Sign Language) as video. Thanks go to Elizabeth Forsythe, Lara Menzies, Kelly Kohut, and Nicola Taverner for producing the videos, and to CGS for financial support in the making of the videos.

The link to view the videos is here.

Shielding for vulnerable patients

There has also been considerable discussion about shielding for vulnerable patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. Here are some explanatory notes that Frances Elmslie, President of the CGS and Eamonn Sheridan, Chair BSGM have written that we hope may be helpful.

COVID-19 risk assessment tool

Finally, the BSGM and CGS has collaborated with clinical geneticists at GOSH to develop a new Covid-19 risk assessment tool to support patient support groups and clinical geneticists who have been fielding calls from concerned patients and carers across the country. An interactive tool will be available in the coming weeks – so watch this space.
