NIHR Clinical Research Network
Genetics is one of 30 specialties within the National Institute
for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network (CRN),
bringing together communities of clinical practice to provide
national networks of research expertise. Our membership is made up
of research-interested clinicians and practitioners.
There are over 7000 rare genetic disorders collectively affecting
1 person in 17. Our national approach gives us access to enough
participants with a particular condition to make a research project
feasible. This is especially important as the emphasis on research
shifts from diagnosis of genetic diseases to developments of
treatments such as gene therapy.
We ensure that genetics studies included on the national research
portfolio are delivered successfully in the NHS. We also support
and add value to studies led by other CRN specialties.
